what i've learned

converting a sleeveless into a sleeve entails a lot more that raising necklines and adding sleeves.
you sometimes end up with a gaping back neck and that extra fabric has to be taken out by adding a dart. but then the back gets tight and you have to slash it to create extra fabric for ease without affecting the armscye .
so in the end this came out a little tight, but it's going to act as an incentive for losing  kilos.
the buttons are problematic.the ones i found were the right size and shiny texture as i wanted, but i'm afraid they're too heavy .im in a wait & see mode about them.

a menacing artifact

yet one to bring topstitching to a new level. no more watching guide lines; this foot placed on the seam and adjusted to the wished width produces consistently even topstitch. you can guess i am on a topstitch roll  ^_^. and the best of the best is that it was included in my old elna jubilee kit.i just had  to unearth it, so i can say it was technically free. so there you have it my new best friend.

and here's the lantern skirt, already finished and worn.in all its wrinkled linen glory. rather be wrinkled and cool than wrinkle free and dripping sweat, which means synthetics-sorry.
all the seams are topstitched, of course.

wan pisu, this is fashion because i say so viii

it was going to take me forever to find the adequate knit to make the bottom part.it was not enough fabric for the whole pattern hence the bottom panels in a different knit. having seen what i saw the 50-50 knit i bought was not that bad after all. the option of buying on line was discarded as i needed off black, something difficult to judge on line.
so here we are, crossing one item from the to do list and not entirely displeased.the bottom  panels can be ripped and changed when a better option is found; meanwhile i can wear this number this winter-spring.
the top edges were finished with an overcast stitch instead of making and using bias binding.this is a knit fabric,a gift from a friend, and i didn't want to ruin it as i am left with some scraps after cutting the pattern.
does it look as if i ran out of fabric? what do you think?

being biased

kms and kms of  silk strips cut on the bias. joining them was no easy feat for a mild dislexic. left, right, wrong side, right side now match it all.sigh!

the gizmo. most of the times simple is good.
sometimes simple is really good.

now tell me these are not the best looking seams to be seen on
the internet?
 even the hem!

still have pending some finishing touches. it will be a go over the week. on to the next!

and now on to sourcing buttons

top

finished top, quite happy with the outcome.  it hangs well although it looks a bit wonky in the photo because it has no buttons so it is pinned closed.don't know if i'll find the buttons i want: matte plastic squares.
the fabric is nice and crisp and the marriage of aizome and kakishibu zome yarns is a winner.
such pleasure of being in command of all the process from dye pot to final garment.i know; i'm missing spinning, but life's not getting longer.

a well spent weekend

another installment of this is fashion because i say so. spent the weekend sewing  the summer wardrobe .
i've lost a lot of weight-not complaining because i'm close to my old self-but that means either sewing or spending time taking in clothes. and i much do the former than the latter.

i scored this wonderful linen fabric in nippori's fabric town when i was in tokyo. There's  something for everyone in fabric town ; notions  nice quilting fabrics, gorgeous fabrics as well as very ugly tacky ones, upholstery fabrics, you name it. it was made clear there  that japan is a textile manufacturing power.
the bad was that it was golden week and 90% of the shops were closed.the good is that my visa was more than grateful.
back to my fabric it is a bluish grey double weave linen with circular  areas of double weave known to weavers as pockets.
the pattern is a download from tessutti in australia. fun sewing and very  easy wear boho looking ^_^ !

50 years of pret-a-porter

from the 50's to now a chronicle of the raise and decline of the fashion and textile industry in catalunya.

       tailleur                                                    perfect lbd

those wool crepes ceased to exist long time ago.

 good pattern making skills dress

innovative use of cotton gauze : ruched, needle felted and then covered in tulle. a fresh contemporary approach to wedding dresses.
also interesting to note how the sizing gradually changed and contrary to the fact getting smaller and smaller.

sorry for the photos, they were taken w. my phone.

this is fashion because i say so -vii

have i mentioned that i have a toy loom? i couldn't get enough width, without weaving double, for the front pattern . the problem was the curved bottom so forget about placing it on fold .
i redesigned the front more a case of engeneering, by cutting two front pieces and adding the curve. the pattern originally didn't have it because the skirt rests at the hipbone, but i like to live dangerously.
all in all it was an easy sew,it came out well and  i'm very pleased with  it. new outfit for the weekend!
now i have to get back to the silk merino skirt that is driving me nuts.

traditionalists

in business, weaving my herringbone yardage. decided to do a 12 thread herringbone for a bigger scale.
herringbone is not forgiving at all, the mistakes glare back at you without pity.
so far everything's going ok, no broken threads, no tension problems.famous last words??

meanwhile in husband-san's closet.....
