of softwares and the common good

some days ago my knitting guru posted a link to arahpaint in one of the fb groups. an old friend of mine i found it when it was a linux only software. curious about its capabilities i even installed a linux console, which proved to be too much of a chore and the whole package was abandoned.
now the software  includes all os and  it's a free download. not only that, but it is extremely user friendly, and speaks in a textile language. loads of capabilities, it can be used for almost any textile practice that you can think of. it is the aspirin for tilling nightmares can isolate repeats from images and from there you can create stencils, printing screens and whatevers. in combination with other programs one can create dithered images as the above and then apply filters. still need to explore it combined with weaving programs.
do yourself a favor and download it. you're welcome.

textile alchemy

dazzling.what an exhibit we have been graced with.
the caixa de catalunya savings bank  foundation along with the fondazione mariano frotuny in venice have designed a mesmerizing exhibit on mariano fortuny ( ny pronounced like one with a stuffed nose pronouncing an n) textile magician, fashion designer, master photographer, painter  and aesthete.
the  exhibit comes with the bonus that it is housed  at gaudi's la pedrera's exhibition hall. just the walk up the magnificent stairs was a starter for delights to come.

we are all familiar with fortuny's sumptuous delphos dress, however, his textile production which included printing , dyeing, fashion  and lace design is not as popular. i am still under the spell of his velvets, and their jewel tone colors, tiziano and  venice in textiles. something i found fascinating was the velvet brocades with their metallic wefts woven in  what i perceived as a crepe structure.
other examples included velvets printed with metallic paints and silks printed with charcoal dust!

what a glorious nut he was !
drawing influences from eastern cultures and experimenting with materials, dyes and  processes he designed fashion  and furnishing fabrics from his atelier in venice from 1906 onwards.
during this time he also created innovative printing procedures and  designed  the machines to aid in the process, accumulating around two dozen machine  patents. among these the pleating machine to create his pleated fabrics, that would be turned into the delphos dresses and tunics.
as i looked at   photographs of some of the pleated fabrics produced in his venetian atelier and then closely examined  the pleated dresses i  could establish a link between arashi shibori and his fabrics. a   link that was confirmed as i walked into another of the rooms to find katzome stencils from his collection. an exciting find indeed.

fortuny's  fashion designs were uniquely elegant  and liberating at a time when corsets were de rigeur. no wonder proust dresess the duchesse de germantes in a fortuny gown.
also displayed there were simple silk tunics  reminiscent of morrocan djellabas  stencilled with richly decorative motifs and  gorgeous velvet capes in what i believe was devore printed.

i only had eyes and mind for  the textiles, but his photographs merit a second visit to the exhibit.and perhaps a third one to look at the engravings and paintings.then i'll see if i luck out on the exhibit's catalog, which was sold out yesterday.
somehow it seems that i won't be able to stop raving about this exhibit.

what i'd do for love

paisley shawl2
Found this shawl in an antique shop and decided to break the bank just a few days before going to Japan, years ago. It's a real MCcoy jacquard weave and althoughl i don't wear it every day it's a pleasure to look at .It also serves as stroking therapy :D

paisley shawl1
Here's a photo of the central motif which leads me
to believe the shawl was woven in Norwich in
in the mid 1800's.

And for those of you who love textiles here's a wonderful blog full
of historical and sociological references. Enjoy.

interesting links

xmas-07

No post without photos, i have illustrated today's post with a post card i finished last week. The top sequins are black, but do not show in the photo. The bottom ones are gold and echo the gold foil on tulle in the top part. There's also some red scrim on top of the tulle and two insets of digitally printed silk organza. BTW the waist on the right side is intentional. LOL!
This is my way of getting ready for Sharon b's challenge for next year- Take it further
a design challenge that promises to be loads of fun.

More links. i found Traditions Mexico not only beautiful photos, but also some very interesting ideas on mordants for indigo and cochineal among others.

For those interested in transfer processes i came across this page with clear instructions on using acrylic gel medium for transfers.

And on a festive note make your own snowflake. Lots of Java fun and the flakes can be used as templates for fiber related projects.
Enjoy.

ok this blog needs some animation

i will be sort of awol because my Nihongo final is coming up next Wednesday. But before going undercover, understated, understandable, underwater there is this small animation i made using Tess,a neat design program.
As those who read my blog know i am an animation buff, and i like to animate textiles as well as fractals. This is an example of an animated textile, For more animation check here

free wheeling

Very excited about this piece.Started out as an interpretation of a photo which got lost in the computer never to be found again.Taken in the fall in Tarragona it was a photo of a building that was being redone and it was covered with a yellow mesh which rounded and softened the angles.

The photo was turned into a grey scale image and some of the clutter was cleared leaving just some basic shapes.

When i was happy with the outcome i dyed a piece of raw silk in black and after that i freely painted on it with discharge paste taking the photo as a springboard.
On to foiling and embroidery to make it all come together.
As a piece i modestly think it is successful, but i've been hashing and rehashing it to be objective.
Need outside feedback. What do my cyber friends think? Does it need something else or should i stop before i OD?

kindness on the web

Thanks to all who visited and left suggestions for my uploading woes.
Let's see how it works out today.
After so much stitching i had to get back to weaving and it is going along well, albeit having spent a small sum on hairspray to control the sticky warp from Hades.
Needed some recreation so i visitedJudy's blog where she has a thought provoking post -Reading Linda Nochlin -about women and the arts.
Also stopped by SharonB's Mindtracks blog which i found very informative. Having come across the video last Tuesday it was interesting to find out the source.
Her post about knowing your blogging audience also gave me some things to think about. Will have to think and phrase the questions i came up with.

About today's image. It's a composite of a fractal image on the background a tesselation forming a textile pattern and an image i found on a Japanese website. And a lot of Photoshop.
All fun and games chilling out a bit in front of the computer.
