....the rest is explained by science, philosophy and psychology

ethnographic museum, ripoll

this cap is typical of catalan  peasantry and many hold it as a symbol of catalan identity.
so it was a surprise to see a map indicating areas where the cap was also donned.

napoli, sargedna  and corsica were logical:
the reason might have been within
nominally linked to the spanish bourbon
monarchy. but i was  very curious about marseille and nice.

catalan as a language is an off shoot of provençal and there's much more french provençal to their culture than they are ready to acknowledge. following this thread i suddenly  made a connection with the textile museum in lyon and the display of clothes pertaining to french revolutionaries. there were britches, flags, women's clothes. and the cap.

fast forward to a weekend of searches and  putting pieces together until it all gelled .and there it was,
why of course! the fédérés marching  into paris  to aid the revolutionaries wearing the cap and singing a a song called la marseillaise .

the story of the cap is long and interesting and during the years its symbolism has been adapted to different circumstances-think salvador dali for example, but what it still holds is the notion of freedom.
i wonder if some high handed art curator will insist on dismissing textiles as women's stuff.

south of machester across the channel

loom model

at the height of the textile revolution, barcelona  was producing so many meters of cloth that it was dubbed the manchester of the south. neighborhoods were built around textile factories as self supporting communities where workers went to work  home and play without leaving the long shade of the factory.
all that is gone. even the beautiful industrial architecture, not to mention the production.  very little of that textile heritage has  found its way in the collective consciousness, hence textile means bed linens and tablecloths at its best.
for me it is always good news when i find someone who knows and cares.
the small model was found in an old fashioned underwear store.  salvador badia canales  has painstakingly reproduced a scale model of a semi automatic loom of early xx century and the store has it on display.

getting ready

Marimekko and bamboos

for this awesome 4 day weekend. nothing like catholic countries and their 1,000 virgins and 2,000 saints.
to make this textile related the tablecloth is marimekko  hulivili pattern by kristina isola, 1994.
how do i know that? marimekko prints the information on their selvedges.
ristina, by the way is  the daughter  of maija isola the famous textile designer.
and of selvedges now, rant ahead. i'm having a hard time renewing my subscription to the mag. their pay system is to say the least  is not very people friendly and the e-mails sent to them  are not answered.sigh!
ps. around 150 threads and i'm done threading.
today, believe it or not i'm devoting the whole day to setting up the hanging and preparing for shipping plan A. i will disclose as soon as i ship it, don't want to test the devil.
