amusements

 gold

bored stiff after threading, tieing on etc etc.it's a good thing weaving is my passion because setting the loom is not a chore to get passionate about.
i spent time during the weekend generating fractal images for my amusement. the one above was particularly successful and led to various what iffings.

fractals animation neki desu

like this animation for example. sorry, it was huge and had to compress it with a great deal of loss of quality. but you get the idea don't you? also wanted a transparent background, but was unable to work it out (>x<)

the image was generated in apophisys 7 worked in kaleider and recorded as avi and translated into gif with animation shop.
it was furthermore printed on lutradur for a t textile treatment which is still not too clear.

there were other amusements as vero was in town and we went for a drink. or two.while trying to avoid any place with a tv set because there was a big barça madrid match . i even got to see the dress in person and it's prettier than in the photo.amandine, her daughter,  is a great help too (^_^)

and to round out the amusement. strange country this where i live. instead of easter bunnies they have easter monkeys! mona is the name of a traditional easter cake, but the word mona also means female monkey (^_^) the pastry shops are displaying all their creations and it is  a sight to behold.

why handmade

social reasons:
because it distributes wealth equitably.
because it keeps cultural diversity.
because it records specific technologies.
because it articulates human relations.
because it relates to community activities and culture.
because  it empowers the makers.
because it does not produce large amounts of waste.
because it  is not  abusive of resources.

aesthetic reasons:
because items are unique.
because items show the maker's hand.
because items are meaningful for both makers and buyers.
because items are  more than end products.
because items go beyond  trends or fashion.

can you help add on to the list? i would love  to involve lots of people in making this list so ideas are most welcomed!

some weekend reading: this .and further reading: this
stay warm and have a good weekend !

listening and looking

my back talked to me yesterday. and i listened. stopped reeding and went around doing some needlework. coincidentally noticed i had a lot of susuwatari (ススワタリ) living in the studio. sounds more intellectual than dust bunnies, doesn't it?

the little characters made their debut in miyazaki's  my neighbor totoro (となりのトトロ, tonari no totoro. but their career really took off in spirited away (Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi) (千とチ尋の神隠し)
watch them move in all their splendor and be thankful you're not a vacuum cleaner !!

a little diversion

Been so obsessed with the vat that i needed some r&r. Calendar Girls may may recognize if they look closely, very closely indeed, this month's picture as the source of inspiration. The movement is a bit rough, but quoting Cindy Lauper, girls just wannna have fuun, they just wanna.

if it's march it has to be TIF

This month's TIF proposal is small things in life. Difficult, but interesting topic as small things are the stuff of life. They make life. Big things don't. They alter and change life, which is a different story, for better or for worse.

As a warm up i started out listing some small pleasant things that make up my life, but had to stop as a daft Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music complex overcame me.
Luckily i remembered Lady Sei Shonagon who in her book The Pillow Book makes endless lists including both annoying and pleasant things. That is more close to life than the Julie Andrews listing. It's also incredibly beautiful and full of textile descriptions of the silk kimonos worn by Heian court ladies.
What more can i ask for? Three of my small pleasures, books, textiles and things Japanese rolled in one.
i still have to make up my mind, but as of March 7 listing is my plan for this months challenge. How to make it textile is another challenge.

As you all know i'm also interested in animation and worked out a graphic representation of the small things that make up life .This is also a warm up exercise and i don't really know where all of this will take me. Stay tuned :)
Oh and for some techie stuff visit the TIF challenge blog
