rip van winkle

in order to learn and develop skills in a yarn craft you need to burn yarn.use yarn with abandon and then spend time undoing all those ill fitting sweaters, failed projects and full size samples. if not you'll never learn. been spending more time undoing and rewinding than doing lately. with a couple of surprise will be able to recoup one or two  projects now that i have become a bit more skilled.

some beauties

warps

'NUFF!! i've been spending too much time on line lately with the shop fronts and that has kept me from doing things that are much more satisfying.i've kept this on the back burner too long and today's the day.A table runner with an unbleached 20/2 cotton and linen warp. The linen will be chained in a fibonacci sequence with a 6 cotton end separation.i envision a lovely progression from unbleached linen to gold to brown mirrored in the middle. The linen is Bockens 16/2 and was bought in Helsinki last summer. The unbleached cotton is from Lunatic Fringe picked up during a visit to my sister in Florida.
wefts
The wefts... we're talking beauty here.
Take a look at the gorgeous Haitian cotton. At the risk of sounding like a travel guide i t was bought in situ during a trip to the island.i hoarded back 5 or 6 huge kilo skeins through customs under puzzled looks from the officials. Those were the days!

This yarn was very popular in the late 70s for upholstery. It presents some inconveniences as veg matter has not been totally removed and it can color the resulting fabric. But i don't care. Wabi-sabi here, the beauty of imperfect things :)
The yarn is very loosely spun with very tightly twisted parts resulting in curls and flocks and kinks. An autumn color tow linen will blend the warps together.
The sett will be pretty open something like 8 ends x cms.to take advantage of the yarn texture.
But we shall see if it works as soon as i start weaving. As the late Ed Franquemont used to say "weaving is more like jazz than brain surgery"

goodie goodie on the mirror

angelina

With all the upheaval i had not had time to show the goodies i brought back from Helsinki.
Heat bond Angelina in sparkling colors and merino for needlefelting. DUH! What's the big deal you may ask. Well, remember i live in an almost materials deprived zone and were it not for my fairy godmother i would have never touched stuff such as tyvek or misty fuse among others!
Note the colors though, lots of purples and just two blues. Hmmm..

fiskgars

Now these were an astonishing find for me by way of Fiskars. The mandrel coils wire and the wire winder makes rosettes as you can see from the sample. One more turn of the spirograph screw! Can you guess where i'm going?

i also went for broke and bought tubes and tubes of 16/1 linen from Bockens to whet my weaving appetite. Although one needs to be judicious so as not to incur in what Laura Fry calls SABLE.

On another note today i got up at the crack of dawn to take advantage from the fact that husband-san is not coming for lunch.i'll run a small (and short) indigo vat, the last of the season. hoping to round out the darkies today.
Now if i could only tear myself away from the computer.......

i'll make do with what i have-said she

But i'm such a sucker for beautiful yarns and threads that i could not resist these.
So i ordered them from Dollmaker through my friend Holly and they were waiting for me at my mom's when i got there. While there i must confess that i also picked up some glittery threads at Wallmart, where i avoid shopping, but i said to myself, just for once what the heck. Hope the breach of principles does not get me bad karma.
Now i have to make up for the missed TAST week stitches.
i'm thinking about cheating and rolling all of them into one single piece so that i can rehook to the pace in one week. We shall see.
Moving on to blogging. Came back to find Blogger sort of embeded (pun) into Picassa which means among other things that there's a space limit for one's picts. Then of course one can buy extra space. The end of free is here. Guess i'll have to get Flickr.
