daring

once you realize nothing is lost if you go wrong you are free to dare.
stamping and machine stitching on machine knitting.
an instagram friend noted that this looks a lot like the double exposure photos i have been posting.
another turn of the screw since it began with a photo.

timber! timber! the brake,the brake!

with just some minor errors showing up in this piece i can say the beast has been tamed. at least with the yarn combination i used here. other yarns will have different parameters.
i am going to hack the image  further and knit it again. all i can say i am a very happy camper.

what if

i add visual layers and repurpose all those tension swatches?
this is a start, embroidery doesn't work unless a very heavy yarn is used. sort of an overkill i think.

the algorithm

all that can go wrong when knitting (and then some more)
upper tension masts, yarn can disengage or get tangled

tension and main carriage setting

ribber settings and tension

yarn does not feed properly( causing a dreaded free pass precipitating knitting to the floor)

yarn gets caught in gate pegs- knitting bunches up
forget to change colors

but when it all works  properly together it is exhilarating!

of process

3 color double bed jacquard, what a mouthful!the mishaps multiplied by 3 yarns can grow exponentially.
funny how in weaving for me a 20/2 cotton is on the thick side whereas in machine knitting it is considered fine. set the machine, tension dial and tension mast for thickish yarn and you have a tension problem. then the right amount of weight and whether to use the fine knitting bar or not.
to sum it up; a weekend of sampling, learning the ins and outs and clothing myself with a cloak of patience.

Asturias,Oviedo. in this case no news is bad news.(╯︵╰,)

of loom hacks

setting up my new sectional beam.to be honest i think i succumbed to peer pressure because
c'mon! weavers in bali and laos produce breath taking textiles without sectional beams. but oh well! no matter how zen and minimal i start out i inevitably end up baroque.just to show that i am occidental and not oriental.

this is the hack-photo permission kindly allowed by margreet. i have been following her hacks which come anointed by mr louet in person!

i am having the uprights built by a carpenter to be able to install the sectional beam and move another beam to the back. eventually i'll extend the floor supports to square  the back and move the uprights to the back, making the loom look like a real one and not a lame number-pun intended.
also i think it will improve the shed although mr. louet said it would neither harm nor benefit the shed.

these were going to be the woe factor; i was ready to write a schmaltzy plea to louet nl asking them to sell me the 4 that were needed.
however the hardware gods graced me as i was able to find them locally.  i did hours of internet surfing and was not able to find its appellation therefore i brought a photo with me to the hardware. (yes, i love to be sneered at in hardware stores )
 (╯︵╰,)
please enlighten me. it's not a bolt as,bolt barrels are threaded and this one is just 3 cms at the bottom.and what about the thingie that catches the bolt at the end? must have a fascinating name pared to its nonetheless fascinating function.

and while on sampling

the proverbial left over warp in use. the sample above is one pick s twist, one z twist silk crepe yarn.
very successful texture  。^‿^。

tricot s and z twist yarn

16 ends x cm and 10 ends x cm with a light beat.
the light beat is more pliable and supple, but less stretchy. something to keep in mind in weaving yardage for clothing.

all in all fun experiments. a bit of structure after the jolly times with my bestie.she left and i took to the loom.

sampling for a bride

  linen knit

silk bourette knit

crepe silk

i am making a shawl for a friend who is getting married in september. mailing these three samples for her to chose.if she chooses the linen knit i will be a very happy camper!
the woven sample has to be researched more as the crepe silk becomes quite scratchy after wet finishing. used a tablespoon of sodium bicarb as scouring agent since it is milder than washing soda.
just simmered and it didn't cut it. had to add hair rinse to soften it.

what has the collective wisdom to say about this?
