mad madder

learning experience. most of instructions found are for wool and silk although a protein fiber is a different animal. i started the process and it has been going for 4-5 days. first heat the dye and bring rapidly  to 70º  introduce the wetted yarn and lower the temp so that it goes down to 45-50º. keep it there until you remember to take it out ಠ ಠ   usually about 2 hours, turn off the heat and keep it in the pot to cool.
the first time it was a fluo orange color which unfortunately i didn't photograph.it was so attractive i almost stopped there, but i am on the quest to madder red. i must add that after the second day i started adding small amounts of chalk .however with silk one has to obssesively control the combination of heat and chalk else you end up with brittle lackluster silk.
repeated the process twice a day clarifying the yarn every day.went through all the ranges of peach and terracotta and now it is red orange. at the crossroad of stopping and doing some after dyed modifier or keep going bcse there's still color in the pot.

the madder was a gift of amy sikkema a long long time ago when she visited barcelona.it came from the now defunct verfmolen de kat in netherland and it's madder extract.it is so ancient that the powder caked and i am chipping it to use it.it's behavior is puzzling ,similar to benibana,  as the yellow strikes first in the dye bath but it rinses out easily.
