of softwares and the common good

some days ago my knitting guru posted a link to arahpaint in one of the fb groups. an old friend of mine i found it when it was a linux only software. curious about its capabilities i even installed a linux console, which proved to be too much of a chore and the whole package was abandoned.
now the software  includes all os and  it's a free download. not only that, but it is extremely user friendly, and speaks in a textile language. loads of capabilities, it can be used for almost any textile practice that you can think of. it is the aspirin for tilling nightmares can isolate repeats from images and from there you can create stencils, printing screens and whatevers. in combination with other programs one can create dithered images as the above and then apply filters. still need to explore it combined with weaving programs.
do yourself a favor and download it. you're welcome.

crossing out items

my  to do list is getting smaller  \  ^_^  /
was able after much woe to source funori locally and buy on line. the delivery costs verged on the outrage and i almost had to send them my fingerprints. but it was at my door the day after. trade-offs,trade-offs.

now i need to make the sauce for sizing my silk warp chains.

 recipe as per bryan-san:

I use a cup of Japanese white rice boiled in a litre of water then strained. (keep the milky water throw away the rice or make soup from it.) I crush a few walnuts with a wooden mallet in a piece of cloth and milk out the oil into the rice water. I melt a ten centimeter piece of funori for 500 grams of silk in two cups of water and strain out the yucky stuff through a handkerchief. Mix this into the rice/walnut oil water and put the silk in for one minute and gently squeeze out most of the water.

ground control to major tom

found led strips at ikea. you snap them together and voila!you have 1.60 mts of light.

then with some blu tack they can be tacked
at will wherever. like so, under the castle and you  can have  your private space shuttle  (^_^)

seriously now, i'm warping the walnut dyed wool for the herringbone yardage. so far so good no broken ends. and the light is going to be with me.

processing

 photo 1c4a4b98-30eb-4661-bd6b-1344d14dbc91_zps70b6c348.jpg

my dyestuff supplier, the farmer, came last week to the organic super with a bag of walnut hulls for me.
hadn't done walnut dyeing since 09 when he brought me a supply. it is slowly cooking on the stove and then when the soup's ready,i will dye some unforeseen yarns. and maybe fabric.

turning a corner. the other day i came across brain pickings . it's more than a blog.   akin to a news digest it publishes thought enriching articles about the arts, literature, music, design and almost anything interesting worth mentioning. great graphics and no animal photos. good way to keep informed and on track of new developments in those fields. worth bookmarking.

too hot amigos

to run a vat, to thread a needle, even to think. i propose my hodgepodge salad as a no brainer  cool and refreshing recipe.
 in a platter:
3 tbs lentils
2 sliced tomatoes
some black olives
fresh goat cheese
generous amount of chopped coriander
some basil leaves
paper thin cucumber slices
baby capers
mix with extra virgin olive oil.

enjoy with a watermelon fizz and fresh fruit.

what you get:
the protein from the cheese and lentils,
coriander provides potassium,magnessium and flavonoids;
tomatoes: anti oxidants, flavonoids and potassium  + vitamins A C E K
kiwi and coriander:calcium plus vitamins A K E
watermelon: beta carotenes, anti oxidants + lots of vitamin B6
the cherries and yellow plums are for pure pleasure.

not bad for a no brainer ;)

discovery channels

chart1 photo chart_zpsc049cd06.jpg

a whole world out there beyond our ...frontiers? mind set? did you know that the russians are a knitting super power? and they really do not care if passap, toyota and brother do not make knitting machines anymore. they make their own. russian ladies are fiends with those machines producing incredible work, especially lace knits. designs are somewhat iffy to my taste, but i am very picky. and not only do they knit with machines, they are also superior handknitters; i am paraphrasing someone on ravelry.
how did i discover all this? in one of my incursions i came across  this net which houses  many lace charts, patterns and ideas. above my head right now, but who knows in its due time. and thanks to google translate i had more than a few giggles.

the second discovery is Pamela's awesome blog.in  her last post  she showed a sample  with the kind of knitting i like. she was kind enough to share a chart and give some explanations. it was a challenge for my slight dyslexia as it involves decreasing and decreasing to the right and left of each motif. i even had to mark the lefts! needs a bit more practicing, but i felt pleased to be able to decipher a chart.

 photo chart2_zpsaae452d9.jpg

my take- increase decrease in one direction. less movement in the motifs, but also less stress. guess i'll have to get some valerian root pills to work on pamela's chart.

my last discovery-for the time being- is these lace charts from another russian lady. bless her they are in english.
i am sure you proficient knitters out there will enjoy them.

ladi-da

sugo-drama

been spending time learning the ropes of a wonderful java applet. your pattern wishes can come true, provided you go through the learning curve without skipping any step in the tutorial. difficult for me because when i see numbers i get bored and switch off. but as the saying goes no pain, no gain.
a link to the applet can be found here http://mysite.verizon.net/jeremy_erwin/ .
it comes with pdf instructions and a tutorial.
another excellent find was this 50's pattern drafting book provided by the perfect nose. there's a link for downloading it after the review.
the weaving yardage is on its last stretch, that infamous las meter which seems to stretch endlessly.

and in case you're wondering what the photo has to do with the post; nothing. but don't tell me it's not a cool photo.

fudge factor, knowledge transfer and less is more

a mouthful of a title indeed! but it's where i am at now.
first fudging. i was getting some bad lifts with my dobby loom thus slowing me down.
fudging around with the cords didn't help and i had to manually push the lift knife back. not very efficient.  so i tried the less is more axiom which meant loosening the cords. voila! the knife returned to the optimal position by itself, no hand helping.

now on  for knowledge transfer:
starting with  polanyi  and his theories on tacit knowledge:

Tacit knowledge comprises a range of conceptual and sensory information and images that can be brought to bear in an attempt to make sense of something (see Hodgkin 1991). Many bits of tacit knowledge can be brought together to help form a new model or theory......

unwritten, unspoken and hidden; in other words, you know things you don't know you know or cannot articulate them.

......To hold such knowledge is an act deeply committed to the conviction that there is something there to be discovered. It is personal, in the sense of involving the personality of him who holds it, and also in the sense of being, as a rule, solitary; but there is no trace in it of self-indulgence. The discoverer is filled with a compelling sense of responsibility for the pursuit of a hidden truth, which demands his services for revealing it.

then looking into how knowledge transfer works. most examples and models deal with the economic world, but the principles are valid in other fields as well. the process is more or less described as this:

idea creation, sharing, evaluation, dissemination, and adoption.

imagine where we'd be now if the first one who discovered fire had not transfered that knowledge?
fascinating topic!

walking around

forest primeval

not only in the forest primeval but also in cyberia.
interesting finds:

  •  for those worried and sick of fb. the meat is right after origins.
  • another stitching wiz  who makes stitching illustrations.
  • speaking of illustrations a portal where one can sell those and graphic design goods.
  • and another wiz this one a  washi maker.
  • a peculiar weaving machine, for those who thought jacqs were it :)

and the photo's mine, just mine and i hold the rights, lefts and centers if you get my drift ^_^

earth, wind and pectin?

pigments

i have been experimenting with earth pigments all summer long first testing and then carrying out plan A, soon to be disclosed. Coincidentally there seems to be an on going interest in earth pigments  something that is surely the zeitgeist. a new era is dawning?? lucky stars pave my way to sourcing pigments locally and i rejoice  that for once, i can source  something locally and at very competitive prices too.

although apparently disconnected to pigments i am also intending to make espelette pepper jelly as i  finally got  hold of the pectin.
huge jar i should add, and with a price tag too. however, it all falls together rather nicely.what to do with all that pectin?i am testing it as a thickener for earth pigments. will post about that when i have more conclusive data. for now it seems to work.

i have not opened the verona red bag yet, but i find it intriguing. is it bengara 弁柄 or taisha 代赭? or something else. who knows what's in a name.

at the study hall

study hall

been studying the book and slowly learning some
new skills.i am sure that if geometry had been explained  in useful less abstract terms such as what i am dealing with now i would have understood everything.

pattern
my first mumblings with pattern drafting. ambition has blinded me and i want to make a dress from this pattern. encountering difficulties  because i need to make the top with enough ease to fit the front. the front  is made of two pattern pieces, front and side, and  the bodice needs ease yet it has to be  shapely. and we are there right now.

more pattern drafting resourceshere  and here.
absolutely ecstatic because i found a tailor's ruler locally. yes, madrid counts as locally no matter what they say.

patterning

my pal rubi sent me in the pattern world direction. interesting how much you learn when you focus in on something. or maybe it's because the ever obsessive in me takes precedence. still remember when it was gardening and bulbs, then mexican food, then dyeing, then.....
therefore without much more delay let me share some of my findings.

  • bought the above pants which will be turned into a skirt here
  • i can go from their shape patterns  in any direction, cool, but stylish.
  • gorgeous vintage patterns here and also here
  • classic contemporaries here simple flattering styles for grown up women
  • this one has lots and their fitting and sewing tips are an excellent source.

OT. my indigo vat reached 95ºC!! bcse i was abducted by webs offering patterns.contrary to what it's said it din't turn into a frog, still dyeing well! go figure.
