more combobulation and walking on the wild side

blue and green 2nd take
before after

A second layer of blue to tone down the white and mask the green. The things i've done to that fabric could easily get me in fabric jail. And still more to come. Will i become a fabric jailbird?

the book of revelations

cover p-1
An accordion book. The first one.i discovered all kinds of possibilities using the accordion structure, that's why its called the book of revelations. And as the actual book of revelations it sets the canon.
Lots of stitching and stamping happening here.

p3 p4
There's a snippet of a ribbon i bought in Oviedo and some tulle too.
p3-4 whole book
There's also image transfer on some pages. The fabric was painted with a fluo pigment and stamped using Pebeo textile paints. It was then starched and ironed to help it hold the creases and shape.i really like the immediacy of accordion books, i save my patience for the weavings :)
Now i have to learn how to attach accordions to book covers.
As ever go here for detailed views.

maiden voyage

 the lovely maiden landscape

Succumbed to a deal.Yesterday i went to the Elna distributor in the other side of town to get a twin needle. While there i asked for a quote to convert my -cheap- bought- for- that -purpose- sewing- machine into an embellisher. The nice attendant said that hourly rate for the technician would be steep and added that they had embellishers to go. They had bought many of them and were stuck with 10 as the craft had fell out of fashion.( go figure why) She said that the original price was 300€, but that i could have one for 80€ as they were trying to get rid of the stock.
Now i am a sucker for bargains. Therefore i ran to the ATM and you can see a photo above.
Granted it's not a top brand, but i don't really care, because basically what i'm buying is a motor.

Here's my first try on the machine's maiden voyage. It works .It's very quiet. It's smooth.
Dare i ask for more?
When husband-san got home i showed him the maiden and oversimplifying, i said it was a felt making machine. His jaw dropped in a panic attack as he asked if i was going to flood the studio with water. i replied that it was needle felt, dry felt, and he said he had just fallen in love with the new gizmo. LOL!

Now i just need a spreadsheet for establishing ratios between available time and all those techniques.

before i digress

nº4 before nº4after
One more stop at the water lilies woven series. The one on the left was the weaving on the loom.
The one on the right embellished and finished. The colors are truer on that image. But something about the composition bothers me.
There's a big work digression coming up :)

instant book

instant book

It's really exciting turning fabric samples, remnants or plain ugly dyed fabrics into books. Right now i'm mesmerized by accordion books and all the possibilities.i've been using some image transfers with a double purpose; as embellishment and also to give a bit more body to the book. Lots of stitching, trying to have it do a narrative. Lots of stamping too.Go to my flickr for detailed views.
This weekend will definitely be studio weekend.
i'm trying to put together another accordion book, this one with a cover. It has finally cooled off and i'm weaving like a fiend. At last!

design principles #3

architecture fac library

Figure-ground theory states that the space that results from placing figures should be considered as carefully as the figures themselves.

the lily pond series nº2

felted2

Actually this was the first woven and i was trying out the colors and grist of the linen yarns.i got my information, that's what samples are for aren't they?, but the results were very literal. That's when i made up my mind to use the weave as a background for brocading and surface techniques.
There's needle felting and machine stitching here. Pleased with the different qualities of the encircling line.
Meanwhile there's a downpour outside...oh no !and a hail storm.Poor plants.

revisiting the woven cloth

felted1
A very productive weekend.Perhaps as it has cooled off a bit i was able to sit at the loom and finish the linen warp. And now with an empty baby i'm planning the next warp for this project , a definite funner and a neat way to put together 2 interests.Did i write neat? Sounds dated doesn't it?

More on putting interests together .i've been pondering for some time now how to incorporate other techniques to the woven cloth .i had to be shaken away from the sacredness of it and the whole process has been like a roller coaster ride.
Me the kamikaze weaver. The same one who shrugs off the rules as long as the cloth holds together...
Along the ride i was confronted with Mags Ramsay and her ways of painting, gessoing, layering and stitching fabric to to suit her creative needs . How has she inadvertently acted as a liberating influence!

So here i am working over this series, this piece in particular is stamped and the stamping highlighted with machine stitching. Then further embellished with needlefelting and some hand stitching. Coincidentally the subject, not the theme, is lily ponds and it is somewhat recurrent as i recall another lily pond from my tapestry weaving days.

All in all i wove 7 small works which will be embellished to different degrees.
The lengths one goes to for creating jacquard wanna be figured cloth :) :)
More about that tomorrow. Or perhaps day after as this week is going to be heavily social.
Be well.
