1-2- cha cha cha

heels

It seems that i have limited brain space and currently all of it is occupied by/with Nihongo and its intricacies.
i have been working on this series as on automatic writing. Just flowing out.
And it has taken Jude and MargB astute comments to put me on track and start making associations. DUHH!!
Curious to see what the effect of establishing all those associations will be.

For the time being here's the latest postcard. Lovely tyvek again. This time digi printed on an iridescent background. And pleated tulle, something i reclaimed from a postcard i made last year.
Check my Flickr for some explanatory notes on the card.
And if someone knows the name of those pom pom trimmings please leave a message.

Back to Nihongo. ときょう が いちばん多きです

working to the music

red dots

"At last".
The work is flowing effortlessly and it's been very enjoyable. Tyvek is a source of wonder as i've discovered you don't really need to distress it to make it work. Mind you i like the distressed look, but somehow this does not go with my mother in law. And as all of you who read this blog sense it , yes, this series is about her.

There are other ideas to work on and for now they're on the back burner as i need time to study Nihongo. The good news is that i have a feeling we're only studying kanjies covered in the Noken test. No exoticalia such as to go up to Tokyo or volcanic rock. The bad news is that i miss my former classmates a lot. They were a very special lot and incredibly funny and we were on the same wave length.. And i miss Sensei too. He is such a good teacher. i think that next year i'm going back to his academic arms :-)

before i get abducted...

lace and dots

by the inaugural ceremony here's the second installment of the lace series. There's a bit of beading on the left hand top, some machine stitching and lots of painted dots. And there are some punched out dots backed with tulle to give it a more airy feeling. All on a Tyvek substrate, the material i'm getting to love, straight up no distressing.

putting it all together

 lace 1

i'm working with an old lace mantilla that belonged to my mother in law's mother. i believe it is Chantilly lace beautifully hand embroidered on silk tulle. It is unfortunately disintegrating to the touch, that's why i have no regrets in cutting it up.

When i saw this lace i instantly knew i wanted to work with it in some way and started thinking in ways of putting the concept behind it and the actual material together. i also wanted to use the new materials i have lately come in contact with, but in a non dominant way.
Going further on this i'm using a Tyvek substrate, adding color and also heat treating some bits for texture, putting to use what i learned in the Fibre-in Form workshop that i took last month.
So far i think i've managed not to throw all into one piece. Comments anyone?

The work is is coming along as a new series and i'm enjoying it very much.
There is an interesting connection as some days ago a question was raised in Stitching Fingers about theme and motivation to which i answered that among other things textiles and cloth motivated me.

And keeping on with the motivation topic i started Japanese lessons again. Gosh can't start counting the ways i enjoy studying it, albeit the fact that it will take over my life. However, this term classes are once a week, an ideal scenario for an おばさん ( obasan ) like me :)

Meanwhile in planet weaving everything's on hold as i need to complete 80 cms.

saudade

tomita jun-close

This is yet another example of Japanese deceivingly simple beauty.
It is kasuri woven by Tomita Jun and i fell in love with it while in Kyoto.
Every time i look at it it takes me back to Kyoto and if there's a city i would always go back to that's the one.

Here's the full view and more information about the artist.
