color comes to rescue

pilling

Some oddities here. Have you ever come across silk that pills? Like that above? Strange! This is a remaining skein from a kilo that i bought ages and ages ago in a place outside New Jersey.
It was at the beginning of my weaving life and i was sure i would never have any use for that silk as it was frog hair thin. But it was beautiful and the love of beauty blinded me. Again.

This is a sample of the double weave on the loom. Simple, predictable. And B-O-R-I-N-G!

dw3 Color comes to rescue. A simple trick weaving with 2 colors as per taffeta weave. Hope you can appreciate the color iridescence as the light hits the fabric. Two shuttles are a lot better than three. My can't live without double shuttle from here.
Think i'll have the scarf finished before the year ends.

Oh! and for those of you who thought my fairy godmother was a literary invention check this and scroll down. LOL!

TIF- gift giving

December TIF and i can't believe i finished the challenge albeit life happening in between.
This month's TIF is about gift giving and here's a gift to you all.

Fideua, the sound of the name is a prelude for goodies to come!
This is one of our faves and not only is it succulent, but also dead easy. Once you master the basic recipe you can get creative. For example sautéing the shrimp and other creatures in brandy, or perhaps making your own fish broth.
Never mind the BBQ, as methinks this is a concession to Americana :) You can make it on the stove. And believe me, it's better to sauté the noodles until golden before adding the stock. This will ensure that they don't get mushy.

There's no need for anything else except a good chilled white wine and perhaps good company.
Enjoy! and please let me know how it turned out.

rusted fabric

stitching rust

May i ask how many blogs are too many? i am now a happy participant of the Calendar Girls
exchange. Better follow the link or you may end up in a site full of sights:). Those women are not real believe me.
Next year promises to be exciting textile wise. And i love the girl club thing!

And about textiles, why does blue go so well with rust? Complementary, yes i know. But there's something more that escapes me. i was trying for another less predictable colorway and ended up with good ol' blue. The cotton fabric echoes last summer and all the rust going on on my textiles and photos.
Some soothing stitches while the soup bubbled-extremely cold over here lately- and thinking about how to add some zing to another rather boring colorway, this time in weaving.

The stitched piece ended up having a vintage 50's or perhaps 60's look and feel.T here's some light metallic copper stamping but as ever metallics do not render very well. Neither do interference colors. Will have to take photo lessons. For the time being, however, here's a lot of useful info for amateurs.

a well warped loom

brown-dw

We all concur that the sight of a well warped loom takes a weaver to the heights.
Here's my contribution to levitation and defiance of gravity. A simple double weave in fashion no-no black and brown!

And here you have the the nuts and bolts of it. No big deal.
Now if i could only upload the WIF file here. Ideas anyone?

beautiful kasuri

half kimono

This cotton kasuri fabric was given to me by my friend Atsuko in exchange for some bobbin lace i brought her. The Japanese and gift giving!
It was a whole kimono tan that i cut up in half to share with a mutual friend. Handwoven in very fine cotton it has both double and single kasuri motifs.
The fuzzy selvedges so that the woven design matches the resist design is something that i find endearing.

You can watch this video showing the tying of kasuri motifs. It was hard to resist those frothy indigo vats :)
